Brushy, Oklahoma
Brushy is a small rural place in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, along U.S. Route 59 near the Brushy Mountains. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas–Oklahoma metropolitan area. The community covers about 26 square miles, mostly land, with a little water, and sits around 866 feet above sea level.
As of 2020, Brushy had 811 residents living in 294 households, for a population density of about 31 people per square mile. All residents live in rural areas. The median age was 46.4 years, with about 26% under 18 and 19% 65 or older.
There are 331 housing units with low vacancy. Among households, about 47% are married couples, 20% have a male householder with no spouse, and 23% have a female householder with no spouse. Roughly 31% of households consist of individuals, and 16% have someone living alone who is 65 or older.
In 2000, Brushy had 787 people in 283 households. The community then was about 60% White and 25% Native American. The median household income was around $26,800, and about 18–20% of residents were below the poverty line.
