Dorothy Blair
Dorothy Sara Blair (née Greene) (1913–1998) was an English scholar and translator of Francophone African literature. She was born in Birmingham and studied French at Royal Holloway, University of London. She taught at North London Collegiate School before marrying Maurice Blair in 1939.
In 1941 the family moved to Africa, first to Rhodesia and then to South Africa. Dorothy Blair became a university lecturer in Cape Town, and later joined the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg as a French lecturer, eventually becoming a professor.
She served as a trustee of The Classic, a Johannesburg literary magazine founded by Nat Nakasa, alongside writers such as Nadine Gordimer. After retiring, she returned to England, lived in Brighton, and worked as a freelance translator from French. Her papers are held at the University of Westminster.
