Brown Knowl Methodist Church
Brown Knowl Methodist Church is in Sherrington's Lane, Brown Knowl, near Broxton in Cheshire, England. The church, along with the former Sunday school, is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
History
- The current church was built in 1913 to replace an earlier Primitive Methodist chapel from 1836 that stood nearby.
Architecture
- The building is made of red-brown brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, in the Perpendicular Gothic style.
- The church and the Sunday school form an L-shaped plan with a tower and vestry in the angle between them.
- Facing the road, the church has a five-light window on the right; to the left is a crenellated tower with traceried pebbledashed panels and no bell openings.
- The former Sunday school has two gables with three-light windows. A date stone at the rear shows 1836.
External features
- In the churchyard is the 1860s tomb of John Wedgwood, a local Primitive Methodist preacher who helped promote the movement and was related to Josiah Wedgwood. This tomb is also listed at Grade II.
