Broadmoor Trophy
Broadmoor Trophy
The Broadmoor Trophy was a trophy awarded by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) to its men’s ice hockey playoff champion from 1985 to 2018. From 1982 to 1984, it was given to the WCHA’s regular-season champion. The trophy is named after The Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, which has a long history of supporting college hockey.
History
- The Broadmoor Trophy was created in 1982 after Michigan Tech left the WCHA in 1981 with the MacNaughton Cup. The Broadmoor Resort provided a new trophy for the league’s regular-season champion.
- When Michigan Tech returned to the WCHA in 1984, the MacNaughton Cup went back to the league, and the Broadmoor Trophy became the playoff championship trophy.
- The trophy was redesigned in 2010 as a bronze recreation of the Broadmoor resort.
Discontinuation
- The WCHA stopped awarding the Broadmoor Trophy after the 2017-18 season, replacing it with the Jeff Sauer WCHA Championship Trophy.
- After the 2019-20 season, the WCHA no longer sponsored men’s hockey.
