Brad Smith (footballer, born 1948)
Brad R. Smith (born 3 December 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer known for his long WANFL career with East Perth, a stint in the VFL with North Melbourne, and later coaching with East Fremantle.
Smith started at East Perth, playing from 1966 to 1973. He appeared in 222 games and kicked 69 goals, and he was part of East Perth’s premiership teams in 1972 and 1978. After eight years with East Perth, he moved to North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for 1974–1975, playing 24 games and scoring 12 goals, including the 1974 Grand Final in the back pocket.
He returned to East Perth from 1976 to 1978 and also represented Western Australia in six interstate matches. In 1979, Smith became the coach of East Fremantle and led them to the premiership in his first year. He also played a few games during this coaching period (two in 1979 and three in 1980).
As East Fremantle’s coach, he oversaw 45 games with about 21 wins before leaving to become an assistant coach at East Perth in 1981. In 1980, he also coached the Western Australia state team, including the Australian Football Carnival in Adelaide.
In 2006, Brad Smith was named on East Perth’s Post-war Team of the Century.
