Black Mountains (California)
Black Mountains, California
The Black Mountains are a desert mountain range in southeastern California, mostly in Inyo County with a small part in San Bernardino County. They are inside Death Valley National Park and are the southern part of the Amargosa Range.
Geography: The range runs mainly north to south at the southwestern end of the Amargosa Range. Lower Death Valley lies to the west, Greenwater Valley to the northeast, and the Greenwater Range is nearby. The Funeral Mountains are to the north. The Amargosa River curves around the range and then heads toward Death Valley. The Owlshead Mountains are to the south across the river.
Highest point: Funeral Peak, 6,384 feet (1,946 meters).
Notable features: Dante's View and Coffin Peak are at the northern end of the range.
Mining history: To the east of the range was the Lila C Mine, a borax mine. In 1914, Francis Marion Smith’s Pacific Coast Borax Company built the Death Valley Railroad to serve nearby mines, with a spur to the Lila C tracks.
