Birds in Row
Birds in Row is a French hardcore punk band from Laval, formed in 2009. It’s a three‑piece group whose members perform under initials and crop their faces in photos so the band comes across as a unit rather than as three individuals. They mix post‑hardcore, screamo, and melodic hardcore and sing in English to reach listeners around the world.
The band started when two members’ previous group split up, and they chose the name because it reflects both freedom and how people can end up following others. Early releases, Rise of the Phoenix (2009) and Cottbus (2010), came out on Vitriol Records. They began writing their debut album in 2011, signed to Deathwish Inc. in 2011, and released You, Me & the Violence in 2012. Vitriol reissued the early EPs as Collected the same year.
Birds in Row have toured a lot. They did a United States stint with Loma Prieta in 2012, and European tours with Converge and Rise and Fall in 2012, plus various runs in 2013. A video for the song Pilori appeared in 2012, and they played Fluff Fest in 2013, 2015 and 2017. In late 2013 they opened for The Chariot on their final tour. In 2014 the band announced a lineup change; a member left and another joined.
Rather than putting out a full‑length right away, they released EPs and splits, including Personal War on Deathwish and a split with WAITC on Throatruiner Records. Their lyrics focus on how relationships and choices affect friendships and life with others.
In 2018 they released their second full‑length, We Already Lost the World, with a lyric video for the track 15-38. Critics described it as slower and darker but still heavy.
Birds in Row remains a three‑piece that emphasizes songs and ideas over individual members, and they continue to be active in the hardcore scene.
