Bennett Valley AVA
Bennett Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area in Sonoma County, California. Established on October 30, 2003, it sits within the North Coast AVA and is mostly inside the Sonoma Valley AVA, with small overlaps into the Sonoma Coast AVA and the Sonoma Mountain AVA.
Location and climate
Bennett Valley is surrounded by the Bennett and Sonoma Mountains, with Crane Canyon allowing cool coastal fog to sweep into the valley. This inland position gives the region a moderated climate. Elevations range from about 250 to 1,850 feet, and most vineyards sit around 500 to 600 feet. The area gets about 36 to 40 inches of rain each year.
Soils and geography
The valley features Goulding clay, Cobbly clay loam, and soils developed from metamorphosed igneous rock and weathered andesitic basalt. The valley’s sheltered setting and fog flow create a distinct microclimate that helps shape its wines.
Size and production
Bennett Valley covers about 8,140 acres. About 650 acres are planted to vines, with around 6 vineyards and 8 wineries operating in the AVA.
Grapes grown
Leading varieties include Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel, along with several other grapes.
History and naming
The Bennett Valley name honors early settler James N. Bennett. The region has a long viticultural heritage dating back to the 1800s, with notable vintners like Isaac DeTurk. The area faced challenges from phylloxera and Prohibition, but viticulture began to rebound in the 1970s. Matanzas Creek Winery later became the first modern winery established in Bennett Valley.
Notes on boundaries
Bennett Valley is mostly contained within the Sonoma Valley AVA, with small overlaps into the Sonoma Mountain AVA and a tiny portion into the Sonoma Coast AVA. The boundary aligns with the Matanzas Creek watershed and follows ridgelines that define the valley’s edges.
