Futsal in Scotland
Futsal in Scotland is the regulated version of five-a-side football, played mainly indoors. Perth has been a central hub since 1997, when the first league began with four teams and grew from there.
In 1999, Perth started Youth Futsal coaching to create a steady flow of players into the adult league. In 2000, Mark Potter launched the Scottish Futsal League. By late 2001, the Scottish Futsal Federation split into Adult and Youth branches, with Potter taking charge of the adult league.
In December 2001, the Scottish Football Association (SFA) officially recognized futsal, the regulated form of the game. This helped futsal grow in Scotland, with goals of future international competition.
Over the years, futsal in Scotland connected with wider UK efforts. In 2005, the Scottish Futsal League joined the Futsal Premier League to promote futsal across the UK, and in 2006 eight teams competed in the Scottish section of the FPL. Scotland’s teams began entering UEFA competitions, although early attempts did not progress far.
In 2008, the SFL parted ways with the Futsal Premier League. A major restructuring came in 2014, creating regional leagues in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, plus the long-running Perth league, in partnership with the SFA and SAFA. The 2014/15 season featured a finals weekend to crown the Scottish champions, with Fair City Santos among the top teams.
2014 saw the formation of Scotland’s National Futsal Team, with Mark Potter as the first head coach. The national team began competing in UEFA futsal events, starting with the Euros Preliminary Round in 2015 (in Sweden). The national team also took part in home nations events.
The 2015/16 season introduced finals outside Perth for the first time, and 2016 saw the launch of the Scottish Cup. That year also included a Home Nations futsal tournament in Wales. In 2016/17, Scotland launched its first national league played over 12 weeks in one venue, with TMT of Glasgow crowned champions.
In 2017, the Scotland National Futsal Team played in the UEFA Futsal Euros Preliminary Round in Georgia and participated in a Home Nations tournament in Edinburgh. The 2017/18 season saw the SFL Super League become a standalone league with about 10 clubs. In 2018, the national team played in a Home Nations tournament in Northern Ireland.
In 2019, Scotland’s national team played in the FIFA Futsal World Cup preliminary rounds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There has been no separate youth futsal league established yet, though there is hope this will change.
As for modern success, the SFL Superleague has been the top Scottish competition, with Wattcell noted as champions in recent seasons. Matches take place at venues around Scotland, including Bell’s Sport Centre in Perth and other venues in Dundee and Glasgow.
