Beaufort Historic Site sits in the heart of Beaufort, North Carolina’s historic district. It features nine historic houses that tell the story of the town and the North Carolina coast in the 1700s and 1800s. One of the houses is the Josiah Bell House, home to Josiah Fisher Bell, a Confederate spy in a town where about 40% of the people supported the Union during the Civil War. The Beaufort Historical Association runs the site, which covers about two acres, and also manages the nearby Old Burying Ground, where some early Beaufort residents are buried. The cemetery is one of the few blessed by church leaders from both the Union and the Confederacy.
