Barker Mill
Barker Mill is a historic brick mill at 143 Mill Street in Auburn, Maine. Built in 1873 in the Second Empire style, it is a five-story building with a distinctive mansard roof and a front tower. It was the first major mill on the Auburn side of the Androscoggin River and was designed by Charles F. Douglas. The mill was named after C. I. Barker, the company’s directing agent, and produced textiles such as shirting and sheeting for many years.
The Little Androscoggin Water Power Company dammed the river nearby in 1872 to power the mill. The structure sits along the Little Androscoggin River, just upriver from where it meets the main river. Barker Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and has since been converted into affordable residential housing.
