Bailey Banfield
Bailey Banfield (born 26 February 1998) is an Australian rules football player for Fremantle in the AFL. He is 190 cm tall, weighs 92 kg, and plays as a midfielder or half-forward wearing number 41.
Banfield grew up in Broome, Western Australia. He moved to Perth for senior schooling at Scotch College after Year 7.
He was not drafted in 2016, so he played for Claremont in the WAFL. He helped the Colts win the premiership in 2015 and won Claremont’s best and fairest in 2017, finishing with 22 WAFL games for Claremont.
Fremantle picked Banfield with their first selection (fifth overall) in the 2018 AFL rookie draft. He made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2018, after a strong pre-season. During 2018 he signed a two-year contract to stay with Fremantle through 2020 and was promoted to the senior list in 2019.
Notable moments include a four-goal game in Round 12 of the 2022 season in Fremantle’s win over Brisbane.
The 2024 season was a career best for Banfield. He opened the year by scoring Fremantle’s first goal and recording 14 disposals in a comeback win over Brisbane, then had 18 disposals and two goals the next week against North Melbourne. Champion Data ranked him as the league’s third-best wingman as of April 18, 2024, even though he often played as a high half-forward. After entering 2024 as an unrestricted free agent, Banfield signed a two-year extension to stay at Fremantle through 2026.
Personal life: He married Julia Edwards in October 2024. His nickname is Banners.
As of the end of the 2025 season, Banfield has played 118 AFL games and kicked 66 goals for Fremantle.
