Punta de Melenara Lighthouse

The Punta de Melenara Lighthouse is an active lighthouse on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. It sits on Melenara Point, near the beaches of Playa del Hombre and Playa de Melenara, close to the town of Taliarte and its port in the municipality of Telde. It marks the coast between La Isleta Lighthouse in Las Palmas to the north and Punta de Arinaga Lighthouse to the south.

Built in 1992 as part of the Canary Islands’ third maritime lighting plan, the lighthouse has a white cylindrical masonry tower that is 17 meters tall, with double balconies and a lantern topped by a glass cupola and wind vane.

The light rises 33 meters above sea level and can be seen up to 12 nautical miles away. It uses a 1000-watt halogen lamp powered by mains electricity with a back-up battery. The lens is 250 mm (fourth order). The signal shows two flashes every 12 seconds, with red light directed to ships approaching from the north and white light for those to the south.

The lighthouse is operated in a semi-automatic mode by technicians from the Port Authority of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its international identifiers are Admiralty D2807.5 and NGA 113-23990.
