Babylon 5: The Gathering
Babylon 5: The Gathering is the pilot movie that launched the science fiction TV series Babylon 5. It first aired on February 22, 1993, and introduces the space station Babylon 5, a neutral hub where humans and aliens try to work out their differences. The station’s commander is Jeffrey Sinclair.
Plot in simple terms:
- In 2257, humans and several alien races gather at Babylon 5: humans, Narn, Centauri, Minbari, and Vorlons.
- The Vorlon ambassador Kosh arrives but is poisoned very soon after his arrival.
- Lyta Alexander, a human telepath, is brought aboard to help. A mind scan on the unconscious Kosh is done without proper authorization, and Lyta unexpectedly sees Sinclair poisoning Kosh.
- A council votes to extradite Sinclair for trial. Security chief Garibaldi and Dr. Kyle investigate, while Lyta’s actions suggest Sinclair’s innocence.
- It’s revealed that a “changeling net” can make someone look like another person. The crew realizes Kosh was poisoned by someone using this device to imitate Sinclair.
- The attacker is a Minbari assassin trying to ruin Sinclair because of past Earth–Minbari tensions.
- A station-wide crisis follows when an explosion tears a hole in the hull. The crew works with the Vorlons to restore order, and the charges against Sinclair are dropped.
- Delenn tells Sinclair that the “hole in your mind” remark is an old Minbari insult. Sinclair hints at a forgotten memory from the Earth–Minbari War, setting up future mysteries.
- The station is repaired and opened for business.
Two versions of The Gathering:
- Original version (1993): The TV movie that served as the pilot for Babylon 5 on PTEN.
- Special edition (1998, TNT): A longer cut that adds 14 minutes of footage, speeds up certain scenes, includes a different opening line by Kosh, and restores Tamlyn Tomita’s original voice work. It also uses Christopher Franke’s music instead of Stewart Copeland’s in parts. This edition is included in some DVD sets.
How the pilot differs from the series:
- Several cast and design changes were made for the ongoing show. Lyta Alexander (Tamlyn Tomita) was replaced on the regular cast by Talia Winters (Andrea Thompson). Dr. Kyle (Johnny Sekka) was replaced by Dr. Franklin (Richard Biggs) due to Sekka’s health. The first officer was originally Takashima (Tamlyn Tomita) in the pilot but became Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) in the series. Delenn and other aliens had different makeup effects, and some props and uniforms were redesigned. The pilot’s look and some plot threads were adjusted to fit the series’ tone and long-term storylines.
Overall, The Gathering was an ambitious start that set up the Babylon 5 universe, its political intrigue, and the larger mysteries that would unfold in the rest of the series.
