Austenland is a 2013 romantic comedy directed by Jerusha Hess, based on Shannon Hale’s novel. It stars Keri Russell as Jane Hayes, a single American woman who adores Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice. She spends her last savings to visit Austenland, a Britain-based resort that recreates the Regency era. Guests wear period costumes and act like ladies of the time, hoping to find romance with male actors, though no touching is allowed.

At the resort, Jane meets fellow guest Elizabeth Charming and the manager, Mrs. Wattlesbrook, who favors wealthier guests. Her male companions include the reserved Henry Nobley, played by JJ Feild, and the playful Captain George East. Other guests stir trouble and flirtation, while a chauffeur named Martin tries to win Jane’s heart. As the weekend unfolds, Jane’s growing confidence clashes with the resort’s rules and the schemes around her.

The story mirrors romantic plots from Austen’s world, culminating in a big ball where true feelings collide with staged romance. Jane discovers that parts of Austenland are manipulated by the staff, and she must decide what kind of love she really wants. In a twist, Nobley reveals his genuine affection, and Jane learns that real love can exist outside the fake fantasy. The movie ends with a kiss and a hint of a future together.

Mid-credits scenes reveal that Elizabeth has bought Austenland and turned it into a real theme park, with some staff continuing the playful pretenses.

Production notes and reception: Austenland was filmed at West Wycombe Park in Buckinghamshire and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2013. It opened in U.S. theaters on August 16, 2013 and in the U.K. on September 27, 2013. The film had a modest budget (about £4.9 million / $7.6 million) and grossed around $2.1 million. Critics gave mixed reviews: Rotten Tomatoes around 32% and Metacritic about 42/100, with praise for the premise and cast but criticism for familiar romcom clichés.
