August A. Luebs (February 28, 1889 – September 8, 1989) was an American mechanical engineer who specialized in air conditioning and heating. He helped develop the science of air conditioning in the early 20th century. Born in Nebraska, he taught in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Nebraska from 1917 to 1958 after starting his career as a salesman for International Harvester. In the 1930s, he created the degree-day method to estimate how much fuel an air-conditioning or heating system would need, based on daily temperatures. He also made ratings for oil- and gas-heating equipment. He died in Lincoln, Nebraska, at age 100.
