Multiverse (Marvel Comics)
The Marvel multiverse is a big collection of many different parallel universes. Most Marvel stories take place in one main universe called Earth-616, but there are countless other worlds with their own histories and versions of characters.
How new universes appear
- Time travel and major events can split reality and create alternate timelines or new universes.
- Not every universe is completely separate; some are closely related or touch each other in different ways.
Protectors and guardians
- Each universe often has a Captain Britain protecting its version of Britain. All these protectors together are known as the Captain Britain Corps.
- Many worlds have a Sorcerer Supreme who defends magic. They’re chosen by the Vishanti and carry the Eye of Agamotto.
Balance and creation
- The multiverse is kept in balance by cosmic beings like the Living Tribunal.
- The One-Above-All is considered the creator of the entire Marvel multiverse.
- Marvel stories sometimes describe a long history of universes that began with ancient cosmic events and evolved into many different realities.
Important terms
- Universe: a single dimension with its own Earth and related realms (like Asgard or the Negative Zone).
- Reality: the collection of a universe plus its related dimensions.
- Multiverse: all the different universes and realities together.
- Megaverse: groups of multiple multiverses.
- Omniverse: all fiction and reality, including works outside Marvel.
In other media
- The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has its own main reality and explores multiple universes in The Multiverse Saga.
- The concept also appears in Spider-Verse stories and other film franchises, showing many versions of Spider-Man and other characters across different worlds.
Why it matters
- The multiverse lets writers tell many different versions of stories and show how choices or events could lead to alternate outcomes.
- It also connects comics, films, and other media, letting characters cross between worlds or meet their alternate selves.
