As Variedades de Proteu
As Variedades de Proteu is a comic drama and opera by António José da Silva. The music is sometimes said to be by an unknown composer, and sometimes by António Teixeira, who wrote music for other Silva operas. It was first staged in 1737 in Lisbon as a puppet opera. The work deals with love and marriage, using the mythological figures Proteus and Nereus, and features lively characters such as Caranguejo (the crab).
