Argentine Senate
The Senate of Argentina (Honorable Cámara de Senadores de la Nación Argentina) is the upper house of the National Congress. It has 72 members—three from each province and three for the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Senators are elected for six-year terms by direct vote in each province, with the leading party receiving two seats and the second-place party receiving one seat. One-third of seats are renewed every two years, and there are no term limits.
The Vice President of Argentina serves as ex officio president of the Senate, while day-to-day leadership is provided by the provisional president. Current leadership (as of December 2023) includes:
- President of the Senate: Victoria Villarruel (LLA)
- Provisional President: Bartolomé Abdala (LLA)
- First Minority Leader: José Mayans (UP)
- Second Minority Leader: Eduardo Vischi (UCR)
Elections are held on a staggered schedule: 24 seats were up for election in October 2025, and the next renewal is scheduled for October 2027.
The Senate’s main powers include approving laws passed by the Chamber of Deputies, ratifying international treaties, approving changes to constitutional or federal criminal laws, and confirming or impeaching presidential nominees to the cabinet, the judiciary, the armed forces, and the diplomatic corps. It also oversees federal revenue policies and related matters.
The Senate meets in the Chamber of Senators, Congress Palace, Buenos Aires. More information is available at senado.gob.ar.
