John Lettou
John Lettou, also called John of Lithuania, was an English bookbinder and printer in the late 1400s (fl. 1475–1483). He is thought to be Lithuanian from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. About 17 books printed between 1475 and 1480 are linked to his workshop, the “Indulgence Binder.” The link comes from waste strips cut from an indulgence printed in 1480, which were used in binding a Bible printed by Gotz in 1480; that Bible is now in Jesus College, Cambridge. Because those strips could only come from the printer’s workshop, Lettou must have been both the printer and the binder for that Bible. He also published with William de Machlinia, mainly on law books.
