Antigone of Gloucester, Countess of Tankerville

Antigone of Gloucester, Countess of Tankerville, was an English noblewoman born by about 1424. She was the illegitimate daughter of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and the granddaughter of King Henry IV. Most sources say she and her brother Arthur were children of Humphrey by an unknown mother, though who that mother was is debated.

In 1451, some records claim Antigone was legitimised, which would recognize her as Humphrey’s daughter and name her as the wife of Jean d’Amancy (also known as John d’Amancier). But other historians doubt these claims.

Antigone first married Henry Grey, 2nd Earl of Tankerville and 7th Earl of Powis. They had three children: Richard Grey, who became the 3rd Earl of Tankerville; Humphrey Grey; and Elizabeth Grey. Henry Grey died in 1450, and Antigone later married Jean d’Amancy, a French courtier who served King Charles VII of France.

Her date of death is unknown, but it was after 1451. Through her son Richard, she is connected to the continued English line of King Henry IV, making her one of the few known descendants of Henry IV in England after 1471. The question of who her mother was remains a topic of historical debate.
