Anthony J. Sattilaro (1931–1989) was an American doctor and vegetarianism activist who promoted macrobiotics as a cancer cure. Medical experts criticized his claims as quackery. He was the chief executive officer of Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia. At age 49 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. In his 1982 book Recalled from Life, he said macrobiotics cured his cancer and that the bone lesions disappeared after follow-up tests. He then did publicity tours and appeared in magazines and on talk shows. In 1984’s Living Well Naturally, he claimed the macrobiotic diet had put his cancer into permanent remission. He died in 1989 from prostate cancer. Some critics note he died of the disease, and the macrobiotic press did not mention this.
