Andrew Fitton
Andrew Fitton is a telecoms expert and a former chairman and part-owner of Swindon Town Football Club. He is the chief executive of Transcomm plc and has worked with Mobitex and United Wireless Holdings. In early 2008, as Swindon faced possible administration, he led a group to buy 75% of the club from Sir Seton Wills, James Wills and Mike Diamandis for an undisclosed fee. He paid off about £4 million of the club’s debt, lifting the transfer embargo and removing the administration. He first appointed Maurice Malpas as manager, then fired him in 2008 and hired Danny Wilson, who led the team to the 2010 Play-off Final. Wilson was later replaced by Paul Hart. Fitton planned to expand the County Ground to a 19,000-seat stadium and was careful with transfer spending to keep the club financially viable. At the 2011 AGM, he said Swindon Town was the only profitable League One club, helped by selling striker Simon Cox for £1.5 million to West Bromwich Albion. He resigned as chairman on 27 April 2011, taking responsibility for the team’s underperformance and relegation that season.
