Amanda Nell Eu
Amanda Nell Eu is a Malaysian film director and screenwriter, born in Kuala Lumpur on November 26, 1985. She is best known for her film Tiger Stripes, released in 2023. The movie won the Critics' Week Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was Malaysia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
Eu moved to Britain when she was 11 to be with her grandmother and attended a boarding school in High Wycombe. She studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins, then went to the London Film School. She also studied at the Filmmakers Academy in Locarno under Stefano Knuchel. After earning an MA from the London Film School, she made two short films, Pasak (2012) and Seesaw (2015), before returning to Malaysia.
Back home, Eu became interested in Malaysian folklore and made several short films about legendary creatures. In 2017 she created It’s Easier to Raise Cattle, about a pontianak; it competed at the Venice Film Festival and received a Special Mention at the Clermont-Ferrand festival. She also released Fu Xin De Ren (2017) and Vinegar Baths (2018), which feature a penanggalan.
Tiger Stripes, her first feature film, came out in 2023 and won the Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize. In 2025, her second feature, Lotus Feet, was selected for development support by the Hubert Bals Fund at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Eu was also the drummer for the London-based alternative rock band Screaming Tea Party.
