Zhengzhou Airport riot

The Zhengzhou Airport riot happened on February 5–6, 2014 at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport in Henan province, China. Snow disrupted flights during the peak Chinese New Year travel period, and many passengers were left in the dark about whether their flights were delayed or canceled. With information scarce, frustration grew in the terminal, and as many as 2,000 travelers became involved over two days. Some passengers attacked airline counters and information kiosks, and staff were assaulted or overwhelmed as delays continued.

There were no reported deaths or arrests. The violence ended when about 160 armed police officers restored order on the evening of February 6, and the airport reopened the next morning. Extra staff were brought in to handle the surge, and 647 flights eventually moved stranded passengers back to their jobs in other cities.

The incident underscored problems in China’s fast-growing air travel system, including limited real-time information for passengers and crowded facilities during weather-related disruptions. Public sympathy largely favored the stranded travelers, though some criticized the use of violence. In the years after, Chinese authorities moved to open more airspace to civil aviation, aiming to reduce such tensions by easing flight operations.
