Alor Regency
Alor Regency is a region in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Its capital is Kalabahi, located on Alor Island. Established in 1958, Alor Regency governs the Alor Archipelago, which includes 17 inhabited islands (the largest are Alor and Pantar) and nine uninhabited ones. To the east lies Atauro Island, part of East Timor.
The regency covers 2,928.88 square kilometers of land and 10,973.62 square kilometers of water. It had about 190,026 people in 2010, 211,872 in 2020, and an estimated 225,020 in mid-2024, giving a population density of around 77 people per square kilometer.
Transport is mainly by sea. PELNI ships connect to Kalabahi, the main port. Alor Island Airport is about 18 kilometers east of Kalabahi. After a major upgrade in 2018, Wings Air operates flights here following Merpati Nusantara Airlines’ bankruptcy.
Education is a challenge in many remote areas, so the government has been building more junior high schools and working to improve teacher qualifications.
Alor Regency is divided into 18 districts (as of 2020), with a total of 158 rural villages (desa) and 17 urban villages (kelurahan). In 2020, the Abad Selatan District was created from part of Alor Barat Daya.
Geographically, the two largest islands are Alor and Pantar, separated by a wide strait with Pulau Buaya and Pulau Kambing to the north, Pulau Pura in the middle, and Pulau Treweng to the south.
Time zone is UTC+8. The area code is +62 386, and the official website is alorkab.go.id.
