Lord Wellington (1811 ship)
Lord Wellington (1811 ship)
Lord Wellington was built in Whitby and launched in 1811 as a London-based transport. She could carry about 410 tons and was armed with carronades.
She made one voyage to India around 1816 after Britain relaxed the East India Company's monopoly and allowed licensed British ships to trade there.
In 1821 she carried Swiss emigrants to Hudson Bay, including 15-year-old artist Peter Rindisbacher. She sailed with two Hudson’s Bay Company ships, Prince of Wales and Eddystone. On 29 June 1821 an iceberg struck her, and she became stuck to it. In July, British ships Fury and Hecla met the group during their Arctic voyage. The Prince of Wales hit an iceberg on 24 July; Eddystone and Lord Wellington escaped damage. The settlers reached York Factory on 17 August and continued by boat up to the Red River area.
In 1823, Lord Wellington was listed as sailing Liverpool–New Brunswick. On 14 May 1823 she struck an iceberg off the Newfoundland Banks and sank. The 19 crew abandoned ship and reached Picton on 21 May.
