Guardian Holdings Limited
Guardian Holdings Limited is a public Caribbean insurance and financial services group based in Westmoorings, Trinidad and Tobago. It operates through subsidiaries that offer life, health, pensions, property and casualty insurance, asset management, and related services. The group serves 21 countries across the English and Dutch Caribbean, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Curaçao, Aruba, St. Maarten, Bonaire, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, US Virgin Islands, and Belize, among others. It is listed as GHL on the Jamaica Stock Exchange and the Trinidad & Tobago Stock Exchange.
History in brief:
- The story began in 1847 when Standard Life of Edinburgh opened a Trinidad branch.
- After Standard Life closed its Trinidad portfolio, it merged with Jamaica Mutual Life in 1972.
- Guardian Life of The Caribbean Limited was formed in 1980.
- The group expanded by acquiring Crown Life Caribbean in 1990 and merging it in 1993, gaining entry to Curaçao and Aruba.
- Guardian Life Limited was established in Jamaica in 1999 after acquiring life and pension portfolios from Jamaica Mutual and other companies.
- West Indies Alliance Insurance Company was acquired in 2001.
- The Caribbean Home Insurance Company was also acquired, and Trinidad and Tobago operations were merged into Guardian General Insurance Limited, with NEMWIL merging in 2007.
- In 2013, the company rebranded to Guardian Group, using a single brand across all its legal entities.
Today, all the group’s companies operate under the Guardian Group brand, sharing one logo and tagline.
