Ali B op volle toeren
Ali B op volle toeren (Ali B at full speed), or ABOVT, is a Dutch TV show hosted by rapper Ali B. It airs on AVROTROS and takes its name from the popular 1970s–80s program Op volle toeren. The show ran from January 2011 to December 2016 and returned in October 2020 after a four-year break.
In each episode, Ali B teams up with a different guest artist. Most seasons have eight episodes. The guest picks one of their old hits and works with another invited artist, usually a rapper, to create a fresh hip hop or urban remake of the song. The performers bring their own style to give the song a new twist. At the end they perform the new version together with Ali B. Ali B often takes part in parts of the renditions, and the producer Brownie Dutch also appears.
The show blends traditional Dutch songs with urban hip hop and has helped create crossover hits. Some remakes even charted on the Dutch Single Top 100 and Dutch Top 40. The format has been sold to eight countries, including Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Ukraine and Switzerland. A German version called Cover My Song aired on VOX and was hosted by Dennis Lisk (Denyo). An international version called Cover Me featured artists from different countries covering each other’s hits. A Flemish version, In De Mix, started in autumn 2012 with Brahim Attaeb as host.
In 2012, due to its popularity, a second season was made. After each episode in season 2, the show’s clips were posted on Sterren.nl and prepared by Teemong.
Awards and nominations: In March 2011, ABOVT won the Positive Young Media Award for creating positive role models for young people. It also received an honorable mention at the Zilveren Nipkowschijf awards in May 2011. In 2012 it was nominated for the Gouden Televizier-Ring, but The Voice of Holland won. The German Cover My Song won the Deutscher Fernsehpreis in 2012 for docutainment. The first season’s remakes (except two) were released on CD in 2011, and a Willeke Alberti track featuring Ali B was released on iTunes. All episodes were later released on a double DVD with a bonus CD.
