Alfred J. Stamm (1897–1985) was an American chemist and a pioneer in wood science. He worked at the Forest Products Laboratory and was a distinguished fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science. Stamm studied the physical and chemical properties of wood and helped develop ways to modify wood using acetylation, furfurylation, and resin impregnation. He earned a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. After 34 years at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, he joined North Carolina State University’s School of Forestry in 1959, where he taught and conducted research until his retirement in 1970.
