Platysquilla eusebia
Platysquilla eusebia is a small mantis shrimp in the Nannosquillidae family. It lives in the Mediterranean Sea and nearby parts of the North Atlantic and grows up to about 7 cm long. It is a spearer mantis shrimp, with raptorial claws that have nine or more teeth. It is one of only two mantis shrimp found around the British Isles, the other being Rissoides desmaresti, and in Galway Bay off Ireland it may mark the northern edge of its range.
This species differs from other Platysquilla species (P. enodis and P. horologii) by the number of epipods, and it differs from Rissoides desmaresti by the number of spines on the last segment of its raptorial claw (R. desmaresti has five).
Taxonomy: It was originally described as Squilla eusebia, but in 1967 Raymond B. Manning moved it to the new genus Platysquilla, making it the type species of that genus. It was formerly placed in Squillidae but is now classified in Nannosquillidae.
