Alexey Kosygin (2025 ship)

Alexey Kosygin is Russia’s first LNG tanker built domestically with the Arc7 ice-class design. It is meant to carry liquefied natural gas year-round along the Northern Sea Route as part of Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project.

Where and who
- Built by the Zvezda shipbuilding complex in Bolshoy Kamen, Primorsky Krai.
- Owner: Sovcomflot; Operator: Novatek; Port of registry: Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Key facts
- Type: LNG tanker; Deadweight: about 81,000 t; Length: 300 m; Beam: 48.8 m; Draft: 11.7 m.
- Ice class: Arc7; Propulsion: LNG engine with three azipods (azimuth thrusters).
- Design: Double Acting Ship (ice navigation stern-first when needed); cryogenic fuel tanks at −160 °C.
- Based on Samsung 172 Yamalmax design (SN2366).

History
- Named after Alexei Kosygin (1904–1980), a Soviet premier known for economic reforms.
- Construction began after 2019–2022 contracts with Samsung Heavy Industries; Samsung supplied the hull for the first ships, with the tanker later completed in Russia.
- Laid down: 21 June 2021; Christened: 11 September 2023; Launched: 24 December 2025.
- Handover to Sovcomflot: 24 December 2025, in a ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin.
- First voyage: 29 December 2025 to the Utrenny terminal at Gydan Peninsula; operations support the Arctic LNG 2 project.

Operational activity
- The tanker performs about 2–3 LNG-carrying voyages per month in winter, transporting around 250,000 tons of LNG per trip.
- Transshipment in Murmansk is possible if needed.

Significance
- Lead vessel of a planned series; the Arctic LNG 2 project requires a fleet of around 15 ships to move its LNG.
