Alcine
Alcine (Alcina) is an opera by French composer André Campra. It is a tragédie en musique with a prologue and five acts. The libretto by Antoine Danchet is based on parts of Ariosto’s Orlando furioso (cantos IV, VI and VII) and tells of the enchantress Alcine and her love for the paladin Astolphe (Astolfo). It premiered on 15 January 1705 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris, performed by the Académie royale de musique. The first performance was not a success.
