Abundius and Abundantius
Abundius and Abundantius were Christian martyrs who died around 304 during the Diocletian persecution. Their feast day is September 16. Abundius was a priest who was said to have resurrected John, the son of Marcianus. Because of this, the emperor ordered Abundius, Abundantius, and John to be beheaded. They were executed at the 26th mile of the Via Flaminia, north of Rome. Their bodies were later buried at the church of Cosmas and Damian in Rome. The bodies of Marcianus and John were found around 1001 and moved to Civita Castellana, where they became the city’s main patron saints. In 1583, the relics of Abundius and Abundantius were moved to the church of Santo Nome di Gesù and placed under the high altar. Aloysius Gonzaga is said to have heard Mass there before becoming a Jesuit.
