Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical was an annual New York City honor given by the Outer Critics Circle to the best male lead in a Broadway or Off-Broadway musical. The award ran from the 1987–88 season (it used to be called Best Actor in a Musical until 1999) and followed the earlier Best Performance award. In 2022 the award was retired and replaced by gender-neutral categories: Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical and Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical. Jaquel Spivey was the 2020 winner and the 2022 holder for A Strange Loop. The record for most wins is Nathan Lane with three; Martin Short and Danny Burstein have two each. Lane and Michael Cerveris share the most nominations with four. The award was presented by the Outer Critics Circle in New York City. For more information, visit outercriticscircle.org.
