ABNT NBR 15603
ABNT NBR 15603 is the Brazilian standard for Multiplexing and Service Information (SI) in the SBTVD digital television system. It explains how SI is organized, defined, and used in broadcasting.
Parts of the standard:
- Part 1: SI for digital broadcasting systems
- Part 2: Data structure and definition of basic SI information
- Part 3: Syntax and definition of extended SI information
Publication and authorship:
- First published on November 11, 2007
- Latest version listed as 0.0 on April 7, 2008
- Created by telecommunications and television experts from many countries, coordinated by the SBTVD Forum
What the standard covers:
- It describes the basic configuration of service information, its data structures, and how it should be used.
- Service information includes signals that accompany transmission control signals and program-specific information (as defined in MPEG-2). This helps receivers understand and select programs from a multiplexed stream.
- The document lists the formats used for multiplexed data, such as PES packets, section formats, TS packets, and how descriptors, identifiers, and related information are composed.
Key features:
- The SI structure is designed to be flexible for many applications and future broadcast services.
- The Brazilian version keeps the same overall data structures as the Japanese ARIB STD-B10 standard but uses descriptor values tailored to Brazilian laws, policies, and culture (including parental control, genres, and subgenres).
- It also includes AVC and AAC descriptors in line with ETSI EN 300 468.
Compatibility and scope:
- The standard is intended to be internationally compatible while meeting Brazilian requirements.
- The three parts (15603-1, 15603-2, 15603-3) together define the full multiplexing and SI framework for digital terrestrial television in Brazil.
Accessibility:
- All ABNT 15603 documents are available on ABNT’s website.
