A. J. Jones
A. J. Jones (born May 30, 1959) is a former American football running back who played in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions. He played college football for the Texas Longhorns from 1979 to 1982.
College career
Jones took over as Texas’s starting running back after Earl Campbell. In his first season, he led the Southwest Conference in touchdowns. He led the Longhorns in rushing and many other stats for all four years, becoming the fourth-most productive Texas running back in school history at the time. His final college game helped Texas upset Alabama in the 1982 Cotton Bowl.
Professional career
Jones was drafted by the Rams in the eighth round of the 1982 NFL Draft. His only carries for the Rams came in a 51-7 playoff loss to the Washington Redskins in 1984. In 1985, with Eric Dickerson holding out, Jones saw more playing time in the preseason, scoring two touchdowns against the St. Louis Cardinals. Midway through the season, he signed with the Detroit Lions, where he played 8 games mainly as a kickoff returner and had one rushing attempt for two yards. He was waived by the Lions before the 1986 season.
