A Dream Is All We Know
A Dream Is All We Know is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Lemon Twigs. It was released on May 3, 2024, by Captured Tracks and runs 34 minutes and 23 seconds. The two D’Addario brothers wrote, performed, and produced all the songs, with one track co-produced by Sean Ono Lennon, who plays bass on “In the Eyes of the Girl.” The album nods to late-1960s power pop and progressive rock and is described as more whimsical than their previous album Everything Harmony, while still exploring fears about reaching potential and the elusive nature of dreams.
Four singles were released in early 2024: “My Golden Years” (Jan 2), “They Don’t Know How to Fall in Place” (Feb 7), “A Dream is All I Know” (Mar 13), and “How Can I Love Her More” (Apr 9). The music blends power pop and doo-wop, and the band cites influences from the Beatles, Beach Boys, The Association, Sagittarius, Roy Wood’s mid-70s albums, and Swedish group Tages. The recording took place in the Lemon Twigs’ small Brooklyn studio using analog tape and spring reverb. Ten of the twelve tracks were recorded after Everything Harmony; “Ember Days” was from the earlier sessions, and “If You and I Are Not Wise” dates back several years.
A Dream Is All We Know received generally favorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 80/100. NME called it sunnier than the previous album, highlighting Beach Boys–style harmonies and quirky melodies; Far Out praised its confident, fully realized performance; The Guardian listed it among the best albums of the first half of 2024. The first single, “My Golden Years,” drew particular praise, and critic Anthony Fantano ranked it among his top singles of 2024. James Poniewozik of the New York Times called the song “the soundtrack of my year.” All tracks were written by the Lemon Twigs, and all were produced and mixed by them, except track 6, which was co-produced with Sean Ono Lennon.
