A Date to Skate
A Date to Skate is an American animated short from Fleischer Studios. It was released on November 18, 1938, runs about 7 minutes and 15 seconds, and is in black and white. Popeye is voiced by Jack Mercer, and Olive Oyl is voiced by Mae Questel.
Plot:
Popeye and Olive walk past a roller rink and decide to skate. Olive says she doesn’t know how, but Popeye promises to teach her. They rent skates and Popeye shows Olive how to move. Olive struggles, keeps falling, and the pair have a series of funny skating mishaps around the rink. Olive bumps into people, slides through a department store, rides an elevator, and even dodges traffic with Popeye chasing after her. Popeye finally finds his spinach to get powered up, saving Olive from a dangerous ride with a fire truck and other obstacles. In the end, Olive lands back in Popeye’s arms, happy to skate with him again, singing about their time together.
Production notes:
A Date to Skate was the last Fleischer cartoon made in New York and the last to feature Mae Questel as Olive Oyl. After this, Olive’s voice was done by Margie Hines until Questel’s return in 1944. The short is in the public domain in the United States.
