55th Infantry Division (Bangladesh)
The 55th Infantry Division is a unit of the Bangladesh Army based at Jessore Cantonment. It began as the 55th Independent Infantry Brigade, formed in 1972 and stationed in Jessore after Bangladesh’s independence. In 1976, it was renamed the 21st Infantry Brigade and joined with the new 88th Infantry Brigade and the 55th Artillery Brigade to form the 55th Infantry Division. The first general officer commanding was Maj. Gen Muhammad Fazlur Haque.
The division played a key role in aiding those affected by Cyclone Sidr in November 2007 under Maj. Gen Rafiqul Islam. In 2016, it became the first division trained for drone-based operations, under Maj. Gen Matiur Rahman.
Structure and units: the division includes three infantry brigades, one artillery brigade, and one armored regiment. Under its support and service arms are two field ambulances, one transfer battalion, one ordnance company, one EME workshop, two field EME workshops, one Military Police Unit and a Field Intelligence unit.
Current commander is Major General J. M. Emdadul Islam. Notable commanders include Major Generals Mustafizur Rahman, Abdul Mubeen, and Shafiqur Rahman.
