3-Amino-9-ethylcarbazole
3-Amino-9-ethylcarbazole (AEC) is a chemical used in immunohistochemistry to show where antibodies have bound to antigens in tissue samples. When an antibody is linked to the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP), AEC reacts to form a red, water-insoluble dye at the site of the target. This red stain lets scientists see where the antigen is located under a microscope. If needed, the stain can be removed with organic solvents.
Key facts:
- Other names: 9-Ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-amine; AEC; 9-Ethylcarbazol-3-amine
- Chemical formula: C14H14N2; molar mass ~210.28 g/mol
- Hazard: acutely toxic; handle with proper safety precautions
- Common identifiers: CAS 132-32-1
