James Coyle (rugby league)
James Anthony Coyle (born 28 December 1985) is an Ireland international rugby league coach and former player. Born in Wigan, England, he played as a scrum-half.
Early in his career, Coyle came through Wigan’s system, playing for Wigan St Patricks and St John Fisher. He joined the Wigan Warriors first team in 2005, debuting off the bench against Hull F.C. and delivering a man-of-the-match performance in his Challenge Cup debut against Whitehaven. He was Wigan’s Under-21 Player of the Season in 2005.
Coyle's club career also included time with Widnes Vikings (2006), Oldham (2007–2009), Barrow Raiders (2009–2011), a return to Widnes (2011), Workington Town (2013), Hunslet Hawks (2013–2014), and Whitehaven (2014–2015). He earned three caps for Ireland in 2009.
Coaching career: While at Whitehaven, Coyle served as caretaker player-coach in October 2014 and was appointed coach for the 2015 season. He was sacked as Whitehaven coach in August 2016, and in September 2016 he became head coach of Hunslet RLFC.
Family: Coyle comes from a strong Wigan rugby lineage. His father, Bernard Coyle Jr, and his grandfather, Bernard Coyle Sr, were Wigan scrum-halves, and his younger brother Thomas also played for Wigan and other clubs.
