Finland held its parliamentary election on 2 April 2023 to choose all 200 members of the Eduskunta. Turnout was 72.6%. The National Coalition Party (NCP) won the most seats, 48, with about 20.8% of the vote. The Finns Party finished a close second with 46 seats and around 20.1% of the vote, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was third with 43 seats (about 19.9%). The Centre Party won 23 seats (11.3%), the Greens 13 seats (7.0%), the Left Alliance 11 seats (7.1%), the Swedish People’s Party (SFP) 9 seats, the Christian Democrats 5 seats, and the Liike party 1 seat.

A notable feature of the result was that the Centre Party did not win a plurality in any regional district for the first time in Finland’s history, reflecting a highly divided parliament. The campaign focused on the economy, climate, education, and Finland’s NATO membership, which had been pursued since 2022.

After the election, the governing coalition that had been led by Sanna Marin faced changes. Marin resigned as chair of the Social Democratic Party on 4 April 2023, though she remained a member of parliament. In the weeks that followed, Petteri Orpo of the National Coalition Party moved to form a government. On 15 June 2023, Orpo announced a four‑party coalition with the Finns Party, the Swedish People’s Party, and the Christian Democrats. The new cabinet, announced on 17 June, consisted of 19 ministers: 8 from the National Coalition Party, 7 from the Finns Party, 3 from the Swedish People’s Party, and 1 from the Christian Democrats, making Orpo the Prime Minister.
