Loriol-sur-Drôme
Loriol-sur-Drôme is a commune in southeastern France. It is in the Drôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and lies in the Rhône Valley between Valence and Montélimar. The town borders Livron-sur-Drôme, Mirmande, and Cliousclat. It covers about 128.66 square kilometers. In 2023 the population was 6,614, giving a density of about 231 people per square kilometer. Elevation ranges from 81 to 365 meters above sea level.
Historically, Loriol is said to have hosted a camp of the Roman emperor Aurelian. The medieval fortress was ruined in the wars of religion, and only the ramparts remain. In August 1944, during World War II, the town was heavily damaged by Allied bombing.
Loriol-sur-Drôme is part of the Val de Drôme en Biovallée intercommunality. The mayor for 2020–2026 is Claude Aurias.
