Leicester City 2022–23 season: a brief recap

Leicester’s 118th season and ninth straight in the Premier League ended with relegation to the Championship. It was also the club’s first season since 2010–11 without Kasper Schmeichel, who left for Nice.

Premier League
- The team started poorly, collecting only one point from their first seven matches and sitting bottom of the table.
- Their first win came in the eighth game, a 4–0 victory over local rivals Nottingham Forest.
- They showed some late-season form but finished 18th after a 3–0 defeat to Manchester United.
- Manager Brendan Rodgers was sacked on 2 April 2023 after six winless matches. Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler served as caretakers from 2–10 April, and Dean Smith took over as interim manager from 10 April.
- Leicester finished bottom and were relegated to the Championship. Everton’s win over Bournemouth on the final day confirmed their fate, making Leicester the second former Premier League champions to be relegated in the modern era (after Blackburn Rovers).

Cup competitions
- FA Cup: Entered in the third round, beat Gillingham and Walsall, then were eliminated by Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round.
- EFL Cup: Entered in the second round, beat Stockport County, Newport County (third round), and Milton Keynes Dons (fourth round) before losing to Newcastle United in the quarter-finals.

Top scorer
- Harvey Barnes finished as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions (and 13 in the league).

Attendance highlights
- Highest home attendance: 32,226 vs Manchester United (1 September 2022).
- Lowest league home attendance: 30,813 vs Fulham (3 January 2023).
- Lowest attendance overall: 15,081 vs Newport County (8 November 2022, EFL Cup).

Pre-season and staff notes
- Leicester announced several pre-season friendlies: Oud-Heverlee Leuven, Preston North End, Sevilla, Derby County, and Hull City.
- The season also marked a change in management, with Rodgers leaving in April and Smith taking the interim role to finish the campaign.
