On 2 November 2021, gunmen from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara ambushed a delegation in the village of Adab-Dab, Niger. The group was holding the mayor of Bani-Bangou. The attack killed 69 people, including the mayor and the leader of a local self-defense militia; about 15 people survived. The attackers fled to Mali, taking the bodies of dead fighters with them. The assault began around 8:30 GMT, with gunmen on motorcycles targeting local self-defense militias.

Niger has faced a jihadist insurgency since 2015, with the “tri-border” area of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso becoming a hotspot for violence. In 2021, Niger saw at least 74 jihadist attacks and about 530 people killed nationwide. After the attack, Niger’s government declared two days of national mourning.
