2019 Fed Cup
The 2019 Fed Cup was the 57th edition of the women’s team tennis championship. It ran from February 6 to November 10, and France won the title by beating Australia in the final. In the quarterfinals, Romania upset the defending champions and 11-time winners Czech Republic, but Romania then lost to France in the semifinals.
In June 2019, Fed Cup announced a major restructuring for 2020. The eight teams in the World Group play-offs would enter the 2020 Fed Cup Qualifiers, so those play-offs would no longer decide promotion or relegation for 2020. The four World Group II winners moved to the World Group play-offs, while the four losers went to World Group II play-offs. Under the new plan, the four World Group II winners would join the 2020 Qualifiers; among the four losing nations, the two highest-ranked by ITF ranking as of April 22, 2019 would also join the 2020 Qualifiers, while the other two would be relegated to their zonal Group I. Russia, Japan, Great Britain and Slovakia earned places in the 2020 Qualifiers by winning their World Group II play-offs.
The 2019 ties were held at various venues around the world on clay and hard courts, including Medellín (Colombia), Lima (Peru), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Astana (Kazakhstan), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Zielona Góra (Poland), Bath (United Kingdom), Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), Helsinki (Finland) and Ulcinj (Montenegro), with events in February, April and June 2019.
