2016 Sunrisers Hyderabad season

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is a franchise cricket team from Hyderabad that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 2016, their fourth IPL season, they were led by captain David Warner and coached by Tom Moody, with Muttiah Muralitharan as bowling coach and VVS Laxman as mentor. They played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad (capacity 55,000).

SRH won their first IPL title in 2016. They started with a loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore on 12 April, but then went on to beat RCB in the final on 29 May by 8 runs. They became the first team to win both an Eliminator and Qualifier 2 before the final. Ben Cutting was the man of the match in the final, and Mustafizur Rahman was the emerging player of the season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 23 wickets and won the Purple Cap. David Warner scored the most runs for SRH with 848, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 23 wickets were the most in the tournament. Moisés Henriques made the most catches (11) and Naman Ojha had the most wicket-keeping dismissals (18).

During the 2016 IPL auction in Bangalore on 6 February, SRH retained 15 players, released 9, and added 10 new players, spending ₹358.5 million and keeping ₹301.5 million for future signings. Notable additions included Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra, Ben Cutting, Deepak Hooda, Mustafizur Rahman, Barinder Sran, Vijay Shankar, and Abhimanyu Mithun. They released players such as Dale Steyn and Kevin Pietersen.

The 2016 season helped IPL’s brand value grow about 19% to around US$4.16 billion, and SRH’s brand value grew about 17% to around US$41 million.
