In June 2016, after the Third Battle of Fallujah, hundreds of men from the Saqlawiya tribe were abducted by the Shiite militia Kata'ib Hezbollah. Estimates say as many as 643 local Sunni men were taken from Saqlawiya. They were moved to remote places, tortured, and killed without any trial. At least 300 bodies were found in the al-Nourain schoolyard in the village. All victims were from the Saqlawiya tribe. An activist said about 605 detainees were later moved to the al-Mazraa army base, east of Fallujah. A video circulated online claiming to show released detainees, with men receiving treatment for head and upper-body injuries.
