2016 California State Assembly election
The 2016 California State Assembly election was held on November 8, 2016, with the primary on June 7, 2016. All 80 Assembly seats were up for election, and 41 seats are needed for a majority.
The Democratic Party, led by Anthony Rendon (63rd–Paramount) as Speaker, won 55 seats, up from 52. The Republican Party, led by Chad Mayes (42nd–Yucca Valley), won 25 seats, down from 28.
Democrats received about 7.93 million votes (61.08%), while Republicans received about 4.85 million votes (37.36%). The Democratic vote share rose by about 6.5 points, and the Republican share fell by about 7 points.
Democrats gained three seats by defeating three Republican incumbents in the 60th, 65th, and 66th districts, regaining the two-thirds supermajority in the Assembly that had been lost previously.
The election coincided with the U.S. presidential election and other state elections.
